DOMINICAN REPUBLIC MISSION TRIP 2015 –
Two men with a shared call to foreign mission work meet in the workplace.
One returns to his birthplace and with his wife, creates a home base and becomes a Mission Host.
The other forms “The Motley Crew”, a changing mixture of caring Christians with a common love for our Lord and passion to impact the lives of others through participation in an annual Mission Trip to The Dominican Republic.
I have been an interested bystander chronicling their work from the beginning.
Finally, for one week, I became a member of “The Motley Crew”. It was both humbling and an honor to be a member of the 2015 Crew. To be a participant in the completion of the last 2 of many homes built (over the past 10 years) for homeless families in the Dominican Republic was special. What an incredible legacy for past and present Motley Crew members to have shared!
The opportunity to meet and work with members of this year’s mission group created personal memories and blessings that will be forever cherished, repeated and shared with others.
It is almost unfathomable to quantify the impact of 10 years of mission work. The positive impact of the many new homes alone have generated incredible rippling effects felt across immediate and extended families, neighborhoods, and local communities. The ripples continue to spread and grow exponentially.
What about those who sort, package and distribute the annual distribution of hundreds of pounds of clothing, food, and household supplies distributed to both new and past families during home visits. PLUS: New beds, mattresses, tables, propane cooking units, bibles…. the list goes on to include those who provide daily programs of biblical stories and crafts with the neighborhood children followed by nightly biblical stories set to movies and shown outdoors on the side wall of a nearby Church. Like the biblical “five loafs”, fresh popcorn multiplied to feed the crowd.
The personal side, what we as a “crew member” experienced included:
· New friends, both on “The Crew” as well as local volunteer workers
· Exploration of and inclusion into a new culture and language
· Being part of a task that became a much bigger picture with God leading it
· Sharing our faith and prayers with each other and seeing God at work in multiple “church-faith” settings, all united in a common belief in Christ as our personal Lord and Savior.
Where can you go on a foreign mission trip where you:
· Are safe
· Are housed in luxury with clean flowing water (when power is on)
· Are housed in a mansion with soft bed, hot water, and showers
· Are literally fed all-you-can-eat, gourmet meals, three times a day
· Are facilitated with needed building supplies delivered on site
· Are supported in prayer and interaction with local/native church members
God was working in all of our lives. He led us all to make a new level of personal connection with those we proposed to mission to. Just as God broadened and expanded the lives of those exposed to “The Team”, he equally blessed us by opening our hearts to those we came to know.
Pure joy comes with God’s love, wherever we may be placed upon his Earth.
WHAT HAS GOD GOT IN STORE FOR YOU IN 2016?
2015 MOTLEY MISSION TEAM
It's interesting to look back on our lives to see how God weaves them together. Over time, there are many instances when we can look back and see how God was at work even though we may have not realized it at the time. When I met John many years ago, he was the Human Resource director for Lifespan. John and his wife learned about one of my passions when they sponsored children through Project Santiago and Children Int'l. Around the same time there was also an R.N. that worked at Lifespan that had a passion for the Dominican people. Seems that everytime there was a hurricane on the island he was conducting some type of a clothing drive or raising money for the relief effort. Sometime later John said, "I've got someone you have to meet." That someone was Gustavo Guzman (who along with his wife house our mission trips every year). When Gustavo and I first met, we had no idea that he and his wife Bien would end up back in the Dominican Republic housing short term mission trips, or that I would have the pleasure of bringing a mission team every year to his community--but God knew it all along. God also knew that it would take that introduction by John to get the ball rolling. So, like John says...Do you know what God has in store for YOU? Take the time to stop and listen...and when you hear Him...don't be afraid to act.
