For the Children of Santiago Once Just A Dream.. Now a Reality
2008 Visit to Dan's Place
We are saddened to report that Dan Truax passed away on December 27, 2009. A memorial service was held at the Richard Henry Funeral Home in Battle Creek, MI on Saturday, January 16th.
In May of 2006 Dan Truax sustained critical injuries on the last day of a mission trip in Santiago, Dominican Republic and was hospitalized until his death on December 27, 2009. Dan was part of the Motley Mission Crew that helped to remodel five homes and distribute 185 backpacks in the Cienfuegos area of Santiago. As part of the trip, he was able to visit Ana Valerio and Daiana (children that he and his wife sponsor). Dan was our construction foreman and a real "roll-up-your sleeves and get the work done" kind of guy. From the first day, Dan became friends with one of the Dominican's (Alberto). Even though they could not understand each others language, they understood the universal language of 'hard work' and worked great together as a team. At the concluding ceremonies Dan donated his tools to his new friend Alberto.

On our way back to Santo Domingo, Dan's life was changed in an instant when he sustained critical injuries in a car/truck accident. Until that moment of the accident, the entire mission team, including Dan, had a dream . . . . to help with the fundraising for a new Children International Service Center in Cienfuegos (where we were working). Everyone at Project Santiago felt privileged to help raise funds for a Cienfuegos Community Training Center to be called Dan's Place. Thanks to the generosity and hard work of several volunteers, Dan's Place is now a reality.
Description of Project: Cienfuegos Community Training Center (Danís Place) is a facility that will serve as a distribution point for the needy as well as a training center that will teach skills to the older sponsored children and parents of younger sponsored children that will lead to higher incomes and improvements in sponsored children's standard of living. The building is adjacent to a larger, remodeled facility that provides essential services including medical & dental check-ups for sponsored children. Four classrooms have been constructed in one building and a second floor added to an existing structure that serves as the nucleus to the service center. The construction of these facilities allows Children Intíl to service sponsorships for over 5,000 children versus 2,200 served by the old facility. Project Santiago conducted the fundraising for Dan's Place while another group from Maryland raised the funds for the balance of the project. Several fund-raising events were held including an auction, benefit party held for Steve & Rita Devore, 50/50 auction (where the winner, Floyd G. donated 1/2 his winnings to Dan's Place, and benefit luncheons around Battle Creek. WK Kellogg Foundation has also provided grant money to Dan's Place. Project Santiago continues to support Children International by encouraging sponsorships in Santiago, and more recently have focused efforts to increase sponsorships of children based in Cienfuegos (home of Dan's Place). If you are interested in sponsoring a child, please follow this link to Sponsor A Child By clicking here you will be directed to a secure site at Children International where you can find more information on Dan's Place. The Motley Mission Crew completed a trip to Dan's Place, February 4th to 11th, 2009. The Grace Puppet Team constructed a set and performed live shows for the children of Cienfuegos. The Motley Mission crew built a house for Germil's family in the neighborhood of Cienfuegos (home of Dan's Place). If you are in Santiago, please visit Dan's Place.
