About Project Santiago--Project Santiago is committed to improving the lives of impoverished children in Santiago, Dominican Republic one child at a time. Project Santiago's mission is to inspire people to sponsor children who reside in the Santiago area of the Dominican Republic through Children International. Our plan is to keep the sponsors informed of ways to maximize the impact they have on their sponsored child's life through letter writing, encouraging them to complete their education, and maximizing the effect of special designated gifts. Since 2003, well over 150 Santiago and Santo Domingo children have been sponsored through Children International by Project Santiago members. Project Santiago through the Motley Mission Crew (affilliated with Grace Community Church) also conducts at least one mission trip and one trip that focuses on meeting with sponsored children annually. Everyone who has taken one of these trips leaves with the same feeling:
Sponsored children and their families are filled with gratitude for the help they receive,
The sponsored children truly love their sponsors,
The $30 monthly sponsorship fee is flowing through to the children and their families,
The money is prudently spent, and most importantly
The staff at Children International truly cares about the welfare of the sponsored children.
Project Santiago's goal is that through a wise use of resources and a concentrated effort in one geographical area, people here can eventually improve the quality of life in Santiago. In May of 2006, while on a mission trip to the Cienfuegos area (population--50,000) of Santiago, Dan Truax was critically injured in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic and was hospitalized for over 3 1/2 years. After fighting a courageous fight for his life, he was called to be with his Creator & Saviour. I wish I could tell you how God planned to use that accident for His glory, but I can't. I wish I could tell you why bad things sometimes happen to people doing good things, but I can't. But I can tell you this--God does have a plan. He knows why. In the book of John chapter 15, Jesus says; "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." Christ love was not only in words, but also in His sacrificial death. While Dan did not set out to lose his life in sacrificial service, he was willing to take risks for something that God had laid on his heart to do. As a result of that accident and while Dan was still with us, Project Santiago tackled it's most ambitious challenge to date, as we helped raise money for a ServiceCenter that will allow for the expansion of the number of children sponsored in Cienfuegos from 2,200 to 5,000. In November 2007, Children International christened the CommunityTrainingCenter in Cienfuegos Dan's Place as a tribute to our friend, Dan Truax. Dan's Place is a facility that trains both the older sponsored children and the parents of the younger sponsored children in skills that will allow them to earn extra money to improve the standard of living for their families. It is part of a complex that will provide medical and dental care to thousands of children. Please read more about Dan's Place and our plans to help with the sponsorships of children in the Cienfuegos area.
